Border Crossing


After September 11th the crossing at the U.S.-Mexico border has changed. If you are crossing to the U.S. you can expect the wait to be from one and a half to over two ours on a regular day; on U.S. holidays is usually less, if it is a Mexican holiday usually more.  A third Port of Entry is expected to begin construction in the near future in Otay Mesa, east of the current Otay Port of Entry; this project is expected to be completed by 2014.



SENTRI Program (Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection)
This program allows pre-screen applicants a faster border crossing, available for car or pedestrian crossing on the San Ysidro and Otay border crossings. To apply, you can visit the Otay Mesa offices located at 2500 Paseo Internacional, with office ours Monday - Friday 7am - 8pm; Saturday and Sunday 7am - 3pm.

Passport Deadline
On June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative) The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or other travel document approved by the Department of Homeland Security.
